SINGAPORE: The Energy Market Authority (EMA) is set to experiment with the deployment of energy storage systems (ESS) in Singapore, in a move that could bring cost savings for consumers. ESS are batteries or other forms of technology deployed on the power grid to store electricity when demand is low and discharge it when demand spikes.

Does Singapore need a wider deployment of ESS?

However, Singapore critically needs the technology and the innovative urban deployment topologies that can enable a wider deployment of ESS to match the rise of renewable energy to meet the ever-increasing energy demand. In Q4 , the EMA had put out a grant call to invite proposals for facilitating the wider deployment of ESS in Singapore.

Does ESS work in Singapore?

Various statutory papers have been published to provide clarity on the deployment of ESS in Singapore and the current regulatory framework. The EMA and SP PowerAssets (SPPA) are also collaborating on a regulatory sandbox to test SPPA’s ability to use ESS to smooth out electricity supply during times of high electricity usage in residential areas.

Will ESS lower electricity prices?

SP PowerAssets is a subsidiary of SP Group. “This is an alternative approach to upgrading transformers at the substation,” EMA said. “If successful, ESS can allow the electricity grid to be more cost-effective, providing savings to consumers.” But it is too early to tell if this technology will lead to lower electricity prices.
